AGRICULTURE AND FOOD

"somos naturaleza"- Jill Harrison

Agriculture constitutes one of the most important elements of the Ecuadorian economy. Although Ecuador is an agricultural country, most of their produce is exported by multi-national corporations who return marginal amounts of their profit to the natives of Ecuador. Currently, fruits and vegetables in the orphanage are imported from Colombia, and thus very expensive.

The farming and agriculture projects at Henry Davis help reduce this cost for the orphanage. They also teach the children a sustainable, lifelong trade through projects such as the hydroponics lab and the gardens.  We continue to expand the gardens, and the variety of crops they grow; along with implementing composting throughout the houses at the orphanage!

In the coming year we plan to build a greenhouse to help with a more successful transition for the plants from hydroponics to the farm. Along with our greenhouse we plan to fund new projects, starting with avocado trees!
